Privacy Fence

This bespoke Douglas fir fence was designed to enhance privacy while complementing the character of the existing garden.

Replacing an old painted fence, the new design sits neatly on top of the original granite wall, creating a seamless connection between traditional Cornish stonework and contemporary timber craftsmanship. The result is a clean, understated boundary that feels like a natural extension of the landscape rather than an addition to it.

Constructed from sustainably sourced Douglas fir, the vertical boarding creates a strong architectural rhythm while providing the client with a much greater sense of privacy and enclosure. The simple detailing allows the natural beauty of the timber to take centre stage, balancing warmth, durability and timeless design.

As the Douglas fir weathers over time, its rich golden tones will gradually soften to a silvery hue, sitting comfortably alongside the granite wall, stone pathways and surrounding planting. This natural ageing process was an important part of the design, ensuring the fence becomes even more connected to its setting over the years.

This project demonstrates how a carefully designed boundary can do much more than define the edge of a garden. By combining thoughtful design with high-quality materials, the fence creates privacy, enhances the outdoor space and provides a lasting feature that will continue to improve as it matures.
