Douglas Fir Pergola & Privacy Structure
Designed to do far more than simply divide a space, this bespoke Douglas fir structure brings together architecture, craftsmanship, and practicality to transform the way the garden is experienced.
Created in collaboration with the client, the structure was designed to solve several challenges at once: to create a sense of seclusion for the annex, improve privacy between the annex and the main house, and introduce valuable integrated storage without compromising the openness of the outdoor space.
A slatted pergola walkway naturally guides movement through the garden, while carefully angled louvres provide privacy between the two living areas without completely enclosing either space. The result is an architectural feature that feels light and inviting, balancing openness with shelter and defining the relationship between the buildings.
Every detail was carefully considered, from the proportions of the timber to the direction of the louvres, ensuring the structure enhances both the function and character of the property.
Crafted from sustainably sourced Douglas fir and assembled using high-quality stainless steel fixings, the structure has been built to withstand the elements and age gracefully. It was later stained black to complement the client's existing outdoor architecture, creating a cohesive and contemporary finish.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful carpentry can become an integral part of a home's architecture—creating spaces that are not only beautiful to look at, but genuinely improve the way they are lived in.
